Oldcastle Co Op was established in 1955 as a Co-Operative Dairy Society but quickly expanded into agri-hardware retailing. From small beginnings, the Co Op has played a major role in developing a progressive farming community in the hinterland of Oldcastle. This has benefitted both the farming and non-farming community. The consolidation of the business at its present location of the old railway yard in the town in 1999, has proved to be a major milestone in achieving a fit for purpose retail outlet. Additional shop space has been provided and the shop and yard are continually upgrading to meet the demands of an increasing customer base.
The local community
Oldcastle Co Op real community development. It was founded by some 450 shareholders from the community and is operated by an elected board comprising 12 of those shareholders. Board members are limited to maximum terms of tenure on the board. The Co Op also sponsors local schools and clubs and the annual agricultural shows at Oldcastle and Virginia. We have also been involved in providing premises to Empowerment Plus, which provides support services to local youth, families and the community.
The Topline group
As part of the Topline group, Ireland’s largest hardware buying group, Oldcastle Co Op benefits from bulk purchasing power that allows us to maintain competitive pricing at our store. Thanks to Topline, we bring prices that compete with the domestic and international chains like Chadwicks, Woodies, B&Q, Homebase, and Heiton Buckley to the Oldcastle community. We also benefit from the group’s expertise in merchandising, staff training and marketing.
